Generic Name-Cefixime
Cefixime is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as bronchitis (infection of the airway tubes leading to the lungs) gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease) and infections of the ears, throat, tonsils, and urinary tract etc. Cefixime is in a class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics.
Uses-
Cefixime antibiotic is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria in the body.This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu etc). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.
How should take cefixime?
Follow all directions on your prescription by doctor. Do not take cefixime in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended time or dose.
The cefixime antibiotic chewable tablet must be well chewed before you swallow it.
You may take cefixime with or without food.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided or with a special dose measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose measuring device then ask your pharmacist for one.
Use this medication for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Cefixime antibiotic will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
This medication can cause unusual results with certain lab tests for glucose (sugar) in the urine. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using cefixime.
PRECAUTION FOR THIS MEDICINE-
You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to cefixime or to other cephalosporin antibiotics such as-
- cefaclor (Raniclor),
- cephalexin (Keflex),
- cefazolin (Ancef),
- cefdinir (Omnicef),
- cefditoren (Spectracef),
- cefpodoxime (Vantin),
- cefprozil (Cefzil),
- cefadroxil (Duricef),
- ceftibuten (Cedax),
- cefuroxime (Ceftin),
- cephradine (Velosef) and others.
To make sure cefixime is safe for you tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, especially penicillins.
It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.
The chewable tablet form may contain phenylalanine. Talk to your doctor before using this form of cefixime if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).
It is not known whether cefixime passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast feeding. You may need to stop nursing while you are taking cefixime.
The cefixime suspension (liquid) contains sucrose. Talk to your doctor before using this form of cefixime if you have diabetes.
Side Effects-
Stomach upset or pain, diarrhea, nausea, gas, headache or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen then notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects also Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor right away if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur-
- severe stomach/abdominal pain,
- persistent nausea/vomiting,
- yellowing eyes/skin,
- dark urine, unusual tiredness,
- new signs of infection (e.g., persistent sore throat, fever),
- easy bruising/bleeding,
- signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine),
- mental/mood changes (such as confusion).
This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition due to a bacteria called C. difficile. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment has stopped. Tell your doctor right away if you develop- diarrhea that doesn't stop, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool etc.
If you have these symptoms, do not use anti diarrhea or opioid products because they may make symptoms worse.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including-rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Interactions-
Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. This document does not contain all possible drug interactions. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor's approval.
Products that may interact with this drug include: "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin).
This medication may cause false positive results with certain diabetic urine testing products (cupric sulfate-type). This drug may also affect the results of certain lab tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug.
Storage-
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat and light.
You may also store the oral liquid in the refrigerator. Throw away any unused liquid after 14 days.
If miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
If overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.
