Generic Name- DOXYCYCLINE
DOXYCYCLINE (dox i SYE kleen) is a tetracycline antibiotic.
It kills certain bacteria or stops their growth.
It is used to treat many kinds of infections like dental, skin, respiratory, and urinary tract infections etc.
It also use to treats acne, Lyme disease, malaria, and certain sexually transmitted infections or diseases.
Use And Functions Of Doxycycline-
Take doxycycline antibiotic exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended for you.
Take doxycycline antibiotic with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of liquids while you are taking this medicine.
Most brands of doxycyline may be taken with food or milk if the medicine upsets your stomach. Different brands of doxycycline may have different instructions about taking them with or without food.
Take Oracea on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
You may open a regular capsule or break up a regular tablet and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce to make swallowing easier. Swallow right away without chewing. Do not save the mixture for later use. Drink a full glass of normal water right away.
You may need to split a doxycycline tablet to get the correct dose. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Don't crush, break, or open a delayed release capsule or tablet always swallow the pill whole.
Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided by Pharmacist or with a special dose measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you don't have a dose measuring device then ask your pharmacist for one.
Doxycycline liquid is usually given by injection only if you are unable to take the medicine by mouth or oral. A healthcare provider will give you this injection as an infusion into a vein.
If you take doxycycline to prevent malaria then start taking this medicine 1 or 2 days before entering an area where malaria is common and continue taking this medicine every day during your stay and for at least 4 weeks after you leave the area. Use protective clothing , insect repellents and mosquito netting around your bed to further prevent mosquito bites that could cause malaria.
Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses of this medicine may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Doxycycline will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold and other.
If you need surgery then tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using doxycycline antibiotic.\
Store at room temperature and take away from moisture, heat and light.
Throw away out side any unused medicine after the expiration date on the label has passed. Using expired doxycycline antibiotic can cause damage to your kidneys.

Precautions For Using this Medicine-
You should not take this antibiotic if you are allergic to doxycycline or other tetracycline antibiotics such as demeclocycline, tigecycline, minocycline or tetracycline.
To make sure doxycycline is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had-
- liver disease.
- kidney disease.
- asthma or sulfite allergy.
- increased pressure inside your skull OR
If you are using doxycycline to treat chlamydia your doctor may test you to make sure you do not also have gonorrhea or another sexually transmitted disease.
If you also take isotretinoin, seizure medicine or a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin).
Taking this medicine during pregnancy may affect tooth and bone development on the unborn baby. Taking doxycycline antibiotic during the last half of pregnancy can cause permanent tooth discoloration later in the baby's life So tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while using this medicine.
Doxycycline can pass into breast milk and may affect bone and tooth development in a nursing infant. The extent of absorption is unknown So Don't breastfeed while you are taking this medicine.
Doxycycline can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormonal birth control (Like condom) to prevent pregnancy.
Children should use doxycycline only in cases of severe or life threatening conditions such as anthrax or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The benefit of treating a serious condition may outweigh any risks to the child's tooth development.
Children should not use this medicine because Doxycycline can cause permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth in children younger than 8 years old.
Side Effects-
Stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea or vomiting may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen then tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects including painful or difficult swallowing or signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine).
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects and In many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Tetracycline drugs such as doxycycline may rarely cause a serious increase in pressure inside the skull (intracranial hypertension-IH). The risk of this side effect is greater for women of child bearing age who are over weight or who have had IH in the past. If IH develops then it usually goes away after doxycycline is stopped however there is a chance of permanent vision loss or blindness. Get medical help right away if you have persistent or severe headache or vision changes (such as blurred or double vision, decreased vision, sudden blindness), persistent nausea or vomiting.
Use of this antibiotic for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection. Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth or a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.
This medication also may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (Clostridium difficile ,associated diarrhea) due to a type of resistant bacteria. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti diarrhea or opioid medications if you have any of the following symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell your doctor right away if you develop persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain or cramping, blood or mucus in your stool.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including fever that doesn't go away new or worsening lymph node swelling, rash, itching, severe dizziness or trouble breathing.

Overdose-
If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing then call 911 or your emergency health helpline number.
Missed Dose-
If you miss a dose then take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose then skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Storage-
Store at room temperature and keep away from light and moisture. Different brands of this medication have different storage needs. Check the product package for instructions on how to store your brand or ask your pharmacist. Don't store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and your pets.
